Some 386 pubs in England and Wales closed down this year, new figures show.
This means more than 32 pubs have shut their doors every month this year amid skyrocketing energy bills and staffing pressures.
The figures come from analysis of official government data by real estate adviser Altus Group.
The company said: ‘Many publicans that I speak to are worried that this could be their last Christmas and really needed certainty about future support.
‘High operating costs and low margins make plots attractive for alternative investment and use so continued support is vital to protect pubs as they play an important role at the heart of their local communities.’
Earlier this month, the British Beer and Pub Association warned venues have already reduced their hours or menus because of financial concerns.
The group said many pub-owners were fearful they would be forced to shut their businesses if they didn’t get more support, particularly with energy bills.
In total, there are currently 39,787 pubs in England and Wales – including those vacant and being offered to let.
At the same time last year, 40,173 were open.
Nevertheless, the number of pubs shutting their doors for good was 13.1% lower than recorded in 2021.
This reflects a more resilient year for UK pub-goers following the Covid-19 pandemic, despite the turbulent economic backdrop.
Pubs have been grappling with soaring energy costs, rising food prices and weakened consumer demand throughout the year and predict further challenges in 2023.
