The Guardian – Abbott accuses Tories of playing race card as Hester row intensifies 

Diane Abbott has accused the Conservatives of aiming to “play the race card” in the upcoming general election – and says a Tory donor’s offensive comments he allegedly made about her “epitomised” the party’s approach, The Guardian reports.

The MP’s claim comes in an opinion piece she has written for the newspaper.

The paper adds that a number of Tories have “broken ranks” and called for Hester’s donations to be returned, something Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has said his party doesn’t plan to do.
