Aaron Carter’s ex-fiancee Melanie Martin issued a statement following the rapper’s death at the age of 34, saying she ‘knew he was struggling’.
The I Want Candy singer, who was the younger brother of Backstreet Boys singer Nick Carter, was found dead at his home in California on Saturday.
Police are investigating a cause of death.
Martin, who was engaged to Carter until their split in February 2022, released a statement, saying: ‘My heart is completely broken over the passing of my fiancé Aaron. I knew he was struggling, and I tried everything to help him.
She added to People: ‘I will now be raising our son as a single mother and this is the worst day of my life, but I have to be strong for our son.’
She finished her statement by saying: ‘I’m devastated.’

Martin previously was previously seen crying in a video on TikTok following the tragic news.
Martin, who he was engaged to until their split in February 2022, shared a short clip of her in clear distress crying while driving. She did not speak in the video but it was posted on TikTok around the same time that news broke of Carter’s death.
The lash bar owner was later seen arriving at Carter’s house and crying outside while being consoled by a loved one.

The former couple had a tumultuous relationship after going public with their romance in January 2020.
Three months later, they announced they were expecting their first child together but Martin miscarried two months into the pregnancy ‘due to stress conditions’.
They got engaged in June that year and Martin fell pregnant again nearly a year later, before welcoming their son Prince Lyric in November 2021.
Carter and Martin split just a week before welcoming their son but reconciled a short while later. They split again for the final time in February this year.
Confirming their break-up, Carter said at the time: ‘My relationship has come to a point where we have to part ways. Please respect my privacy at the time. Thank you.’
Shortly after news of Carter’s death broke, Martin released a short statement saying: ‘We are still in the process of accepting this unfortunate reality. Your thoughts and prayers are greatly appreciated.’
Carter’s older brother Nick has since spoken out to pay tribute to his late sibling.
‘My heart has been broken today. Even though my brother and I have had a complicated relationship, my love for him has never ever faded,’ the popstar said.
‘I have always held onto the hope, that he would somehow, someday want to walk a healthy path and eventually find the help that he so desperately needed.
‘Sometimes we want to blame someone or something for a loss. But the truth is that addiction and mental illness is the real villain here.’
