This article contains spoilers for The Naked Gun (2025).
While the new Naked Gun movie isn’t perfect, it’s still a very funny spoof that even manages to utilise one franchise regular in a uniquely hilarious way. Two if you count that photo of O.J. Simpson.
As we’ve mentioned before, it was widely expected that “Weird Al” Yankovic would make an appearance in 2025’s The Naked Gun, seeing as how he’s friends with director Akiva Schaffer, and has cameoed in every previous instalment of the franchise.
Al’s role in the movie was confirmed when the “Eat It” singer showed up at the movie’s premiere and walked the red carpet in a manner that justified his nickname.
Fans seemed thrilled to learn that The Naked Gun is continuing Al’s streak, but the question remained: Would it live up to the previous cameos?
In the original movie, Al waves to adoring fans from the doorway of an airplane, much to the embarrassment of Frank Drebin, who assumed that the fanfare was for him. In The Naked Gun 2 1/2 , Yankovic briefly pops up as an armed thug who’s inadvertently taken out by Frank. And in The Naked Gun 33⅓, he plays the superstar version of himself again, only this time, he’s appearing at the Academy Awards.
Also, apparently, in the Naked Gun-verse, “Weird Al” and Vanna White are dating?
But the reboot gives “Weird Al” his best Naked Gun role yet
Early on in the movie, the villainous Richard Cane (played by Danny Huston) explains his evil scheme, dubbed “Project Inferno” to a panel of likeminded billionaires. Cane plans to use his P.L.O.T. (Primordial Law of Toughness) Device to turn most of humanity into mindless rage monsters, while he and the rest of society’s elites move into a secret “superbunker,” which he promises will have food, water and “the best live Entertainment the world has to offer.”
That entertainment turns out to be “Weird Al” Yankovic. “What’s up, evil billionaires?” Al says in a video. “I am so excited to be doing live shows for as long as it takes in the Doomsday Giggle Bunker Room, located in Block 4 of the Arizona District! See ya there!”
One of the “evil billionaires” then makes it known that he’s a big fan of “Amish Paradise.”
The idea that Al is happily agreeing to take a gig offered by a supervillain, predicted on the mass murder of most of humanity, is already pretty great, but then he gets to appear a second time. The movie has one of the rare post-credit scenes that’s worth enduring the torture of acknowledging the names of the people who worked hard to make the film you just watched.
After the credits have rolled, we see “Weird Al” take the stage, with his accordion, in the Project Inferno bunker’s night club. But since Lt. Drebin already defeated Cane, the place is empty, much to Al’s confusion. “Oh come on!” he shouts in frustration as the movie ends.
It’s a truly funny moment that isn’t just about teeing up another movie, or instructing movie theatre stragglers to go home, like some other post-credit scenes…
