Kim backs Ukraine invasion as Putin visits North Korea
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has expressed his “full support” for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as Russian President Vladimir Putin visits North Korea for the first time in 24 years. The two leaders celebrated the strong ties between their countries during talks following Putin’s overnight arrival.
Putin received a grand red carpet welcome in Pyongyang, complete with roses, waving crowds, and ceremonial gunfire at a military parade. The Russian president thanked Kim for the invitation and expressed hope that their next meeting would take place in Moscow.
The leaders last met in Russia in September, where they pledged to strengthen military ties. The US and South Korea have accused North Korea of supplying Russia with artillery in exchange for food and military aid, claims both countries deny. However, Putin is actively seeking allies as the Ukraine invasion has isolated him from the West.
Following his visit to North Korea, Putin will travel to Vietnam, a long-time ally, where discussions are expected to focus on trade.
