Atmospheric river: Storm lashes California with rain, wind and snow

A staggering 500,000 residents in California are currently without power, with forecasters issuing warnings of what they describe as “one of the most dramatic weather days in recent memory.” The affected area, spanning from Santa Barbara to Los Angeles, is experiencing heavy rain and high winds, posing the risk of “life-threatening” flooding until Tuesday.

This weather phenomenon is attributed to an “atmospheric river” effect, generated by airborne currents carrying dense moisture. Flood alerts cover approximately 94% of the population, totalling about 37 million residents. 

In response to the storm’s arrival on Sunday evening, Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in eight central and southern counties. This declaration enables the swift mobilisation of state resources for rescue, recovery, and repair efforts.
