Schoolchildren and teachers kidnapped in Nigeria

In southwestern Nigeria, unknown gunmen have abducted six students, three teachers, and a bus driver. The incident occurred in the town of Emure as they were returning from a road trip on Monday night. 

Governor Abiodun Oyebanji of Ekiti said authorities will do everything they can and are determined to find and rescue the children and teachers. Residents have been urged to share any information that could help in the search. 

It is not yet clear who is responsible or whether they have demanded a ransom.

Kidnapping for ransom has seen a surge in Nigeria, impacting road travellers, students, and residents across different regions. 

Civil society organizations jointly called on President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in response to the escalating security situation. 

They highlighted that over 1,800 people have been abducted since the president assumed office in May of the previous year.
