Donna Adelson has been arrested in Florida in a murder-for-hire plot just one week after her son, Charles, was convicted of the same crime.
The Miami-Dade County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that 73-year-old Donna Adelson was arrested at the airport on Monday (November 13).
In addition to the first-degree murder charge, she faces charges of conspiracy and solicitation in the shooting death of renowned Florida State University law professor Dan Markel, who was her former son-in-law.
Adelson’s son, Charles, was convicted of first-degree murder for Professor Markel’s 2014 murder last week.
The saga began a decade ago, when Professor Markel was going through a divorce from Donna Adelson’s daughter — and Charles Adelson’s sister — Wendi.
The divorce was getting pretty contentious, with Wendi going so far as to threaten to convert the couple’s children to Catholicism, even though Markel was a devout Jew.
Charles Adelson offered Professor Markel $1million to move Wendi and the children to Miami from the state capital of Tallahassee, to which the professor refused.
It was then that Charles Adelson, his girlfriend at the time, and other people plotted to shoot Professor Markel while he waited in his car.
