Three hanged for Iraq bombing that killed more than 300 people
Three people have been executed in Iraq after being convicted of involvement in a vehicle bombing in Baghdad, that killed hundreds.
The bomb exploded as people enjoyed a night out during Ramadan. More than 300 people were killed and hundreds injured in the 2016 bombing.
It was the deadliest single bombing in Iraq since the US invasion in 2003.
IS has admitted to carrying out the bombing, and whilst the terrorist group has been defeated and has lost control of the territory, they still remain active.
Iraq’s Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani’s office has not released the names of those executed. The three people were hung on Sunday or Monday.
A government source told AFP news agency that Ghazwan al-Zawbaee, held to be the IS mastermind behind the attack, was among those put to death. Zawbaee had been captured and returned to Iraq in 2021.
