Drivers can now start receiving reminders to pay their road tax by text or email.
The Driving and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) will now send out instant notifications after it was feared drivers are simply forgetting to pay the tax.
This means drivers do not have to wait for reminders to come in the post.
The change comes as part of DVLA’s new Driver and vehicles account service.
This will put all driver and vehicle information in one place.
When signing up to the service, drivers need to provide their personal details and provide a valid driving license or national insurance number.
In 2021, an estimated £119 million was not paid in road tax.
They also found 55% of vehicles had been unlicensed for two months or less.
The DVLA estimates there are around £719,000 unlicensed vehicles on the road.
