The age old debate (Picture: ashleighnekeman)
Perhaps the most divisive topic when it comes to the world of dating is who should pay on a date.
Some believe that, if you’re a woman dating a man, the guy should always pay. Others reckon it’s down to whoever suggested the date, and some think it’s best to go Dutch and pay half each.
It’s a tough one right? Well now a TikToker has reignited the debate, after she got the ‘ick’ from a disastrous sushi lunch.
Ashleigh, from Brisbane, wanted to know if her turn off was valid or not.
She explained: ‘I’ve been on a few dates with one guy and today is probably the fourth time we’ve hung out.
‘It’s time to pay for the meal and the lady asks us “how would you like to pay?” And he straight up says “let’s split it”.
‘I’m just a little bit like “okay”… like the total was £31.’
Ashleigh went onto explain that her date had paid for the other dates – their first date was a trip to the arcade followed by dinner. ‘He got dinner and I got the credits for the arcade,’ she said.
‘Anyway it comes time to pay and we tell the lady we’re going to split the bill and she’s having a bit of trouble trying to split it, so I just say “if it’s easier we can pay together?” and she said, “yes please”.
‘I look at him and he’s not offering to pay, so I paid for it and afterwards he doesn’t even say “what are your details, I’ll transfer it”.’
Explaining her frustration, she continued. ‘Like what the f**k. So I have the ick now, and he walks me to my car and goes in for a kiss and I make up an excuse like “oh sorry I just ate sushi, I’m not going to kiss you”, but in my head I’m like “Bro?”

‘Am I just asking for too much? For somebody to pay for sushi if we’re on a date? And these are the early days when you’re meant to still be impressing me.’
Ashleigh’s video wracked up more than 30,000 views with hundreds of fellow TikTokers taking her side.
One commented, ‘Run. He’s not in his masculine energy’, while another agreed writing ‘Runnnnnn babe! A real man will provide no matter what. If he can’t even buy you a plate of food then he’s a waste of energy.’
Others agreed that his not offering to pay was a ‘major ick’ and that she should ‘run’.
One commenter did say: ‘I would take into consideration his work circumstances and mine and estimate who has larger wage and who has money to pay.’
However, the overwhelming majority agreed that she should ‘find a better guy’ because he has ‘red flags’ and he should have offered to pay.
