Ireland out of the World Cup after loss to Canada
Ireland got the game off to an incredible start, four minutes in the girls in green got on the scoring board after Katie McCabe scored a goal from a corner.
Ireland dominated most of the first half but just before the stroke of halftime, Canada were able to level it out – after a heartbreaking own goal by Connolly.
The second half saw three substitutions for Canada – and a new side, that dominated much of the half. The team were able to capitalise on possession in the second half and another Canadian goal came in the 53rd minute – thanks to Leon.
It means Ireland’s first-ever appearance at a World Cup has come to an end – picking up 0 points out of six from the first two games. Whilst Canada sit at the top of Group B with 4 points out of six.
Ireland’s last game is against Nigeria on Monday 31 July. Both teams will leave the world cup at the group stages.
