Alfie tries to get back on track (Picture: BBC)
When the new regime swept into the Queen Vic pub in EastEnders in the form of the Knight family, Alfie Moon (Shane Richie) found himself surplus to requirements.
Elaine (Harriet Thorpe) hadn’t been behind the bar for very long before she decided that Alfie needed to go, and no amount of persuasion from her daughter Linda (Kellie Bright) could make her think otherwise. Of course this was before Linda realised that Elaine planned to move George (Colin Salmon), Gina (Francesca Henry) and Anna (Molly Rainford) into the pub.
Since then we haven’t seen very much of Alfie, as the character comes to terms with no longer being employed in the iconic boozer.

Having also given up his pursuit of Kat (Jessie Wallace) as she insists her future lies with Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden), Alfie is currently slightly adrift in Walford. There are big plans for him, however. EastEnders’ boss Chris Clenshaw has promised a new storyline for the character, saying, ‘There’s going to be quite a tough road ahead for Alfie.’
Meanwhile Shane Richie hinted that there’s ‘a nice story’ coming up for his character. ‘Something gets a bit of luck going his way,’ he told us on the red carpet at the British Soap Awards.
What’s next for Alfie? (Picture: BBC)
It looks like that storyline is about to kick off, and it’s Freddie Slater (Bobby Brazier) who helps Alfie to turn his fortunes around. After repeatedly being turned down by employers as he looks for work, Alfie is downhearted. Freddie, with his optimistic outlook on life tells him he needs to use the power of positive thinking to start moving things in the right direction.
And it seems like Freddie’s mind-over-matter approach is working as it’s not long before Alfie gets some good news – the offer of a job at the bookies.

Of course being Alfie there’s still the potential for something to go wrong and he soon finds himself getting on the wrong side of his new boss, Olga. To impress her he gets Freddie and Patrick to stage a mock fight. When he resolves it with impressive ease (because it isn’t real), Olga is impressed by his people skills.
