Richard Curtis took the concept of beauty sleep to new levels after he missed out on his own proposal while catching up on some z’s.
The Love Actually director, 66, and his partner and presenter Emma Freud, 61, have been together for 33 years – following which she has since revealed she proposed to the creative twice.
She previously admitted she had asked the director to marry her during the early years of their relationship but that after six months of mulling things over, he declined.
Despite trying again, the Notting Hill director dozed off during her big moment and missed the attempt entirely while he snoozed.
The broadcaster shared that she chose to pop the question on February 29 – a day traditionally reserved for women to flip the script and get down on one knee themselves – during a radio show she knew her partner would be listening to.
Making an appearance at this weekend’s Latitude Festival in Suffolk, she told crowds according to MailOnline: ‘I did propose to him once. I did it on air.

‘I was doing Loose Ends on Radio 4 and I proposed to him – it was February 29th – knowing that he was listening to the show. Then he always came to the pub after the show every time we did it.
‘As he walked in, all our table went very, very silent because they’d heard obviously. It was like “What’s he going to say?”
‘And he didn’t say anything apart from “Great show, loved every minute of it, it was fantastic” – and then nothing else. The table was kind of like “Oooh”.

‘He sat down and said “How was it? I didn’t hear a word, I slept through it”.’
The director touched on the subject of marriage in the past and revealed that one of his movie creations was an attempt at explaining why walking down the aisle was not something he wanted in his life.

He told Radio 4’s The Reunion host Sue MacGregor that he had penned the famous film Four Weddings ‘as an attempt to explain to my mother why I wasn’t getting married’.
He continued explaining: ‘I have to say it didn’t work. She was still very unhappy with the situation for the next 15 years, although, do you know, I’m thinking about it. I think I might.’
