Sonic Adventure – there were rumours of a Sonic Adventure remake years ago but could it actually happen? (Picture: Sega)
Fans already have their own ideas for which Sonic games should get a remake, with many of the early 3D entries being popular picks.
Ever since Sega mentioned it was interested in reviving some of its dormant franchises with remakes and reboots, fans have feverishly been waiting to see something new from the likes of NiGHTS, Jet Set Radio, or Crazy Taxi.
While there are rumours of those last two getting big-budget reboots, no such revival plans have been formally announced barring a new Samba De Amigo game coming out in August.
In a recent interview, Sega president Yukio Sugino touched upon which franchises could see remakes or reboots. Rather than name any of the dormant ones, though, he instead revealed that the company is considering remakes for old Sonic The Hedgehog titles.
This shouldn’t be too surprising since Sonic is Sega’s mascot and the company’s biggest franchise, but Yukino also implies that not every IP lends itself well to being remade or rebooted.
‘Not all IPs are the same for new releases and reboots,’ Yukino tells Japanese outlet Famitsu. ‘For each IP, we will choose which method is appropriate at this time.
‘Sonic is Sega’s flagship IP, and we are considering reboots and remakes in parallel with new titles.’
It’s unclear what Yukino means by reboots, but the mention of remakes has naturally sent fans’ minds buzzing with their own ideas. A quick scour through Twitter points to the two Sonic Adventure games for the Dreamcast as being popular picks.
Other suggestions include Sonic Heroes, Sonic Unleashed, and even the much-maligned Sonic The Hedgehog 2006.
Sonic Adventure 1&2 remasters are definitely games I want for modern consoles

The only Sonic game I think would really work as a remake is Heroes
Adventure 1 and 2 are already as good as they’re gonna get. 2006 isn’t really worth remaking over just developing a new game
Heroes is unique, and is mostly good with some jank moments in levels

Within the same interview, Yukino also touched upon a potential Sega Saturn Mini, which some fans want to see follow the two miniature Sega Mega Drive consoles Sega put out.

With how difficult it is to emulate Saturn games, though, it’s more likely that Sega would skip a Saturn Mini in favour of a Dreamcast Mini instead. Yukino doesn’t quite rule the idea out, but he does suggest that a Saturn Mini would require something of a miracle.
‘I think that development of hardware can be done when the internal and external environments miraculously come together. The Sega Saturn is surprisingly high performance, so the difficulty (miniaturisation) is also high,’ explains Yukino.
