Canada highway crash near Winnipeg leaves at least 15 dead
A road crash in Manitoba, Canada has claimed the lives of at least 15 individuals, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). The collision involved a semi-trailer truck and a bus which was mostly carrying elderly passengers. The incident occurred on the Trans-Canada Highway near Carberry, approximately two hours west of Winnipeg.
Emergency response teams and air ambulances swiftly arrived at the scene. The RCMP in Manitoba deployed all available resources, including their major crime unit, to handle the situation.
The RCMP said during a press conference that most individuals aboard the bus were seniors from Dauphin, Manitoba, and nearby regions. Emergency vehicles, including 12 ambulances and an air ambulance, were dispatched at 11:43 local time.
Officials reported that at least 10 people, including the two drivers, are in hospital with “significant” injuries.
The RCMP has urged motorists to avoid the area as a section of the highway near the crash site was closed. Blake Robert, a spokesperson for the local air ambulance service, stated that this incident prompted one of their largest responses. He drew a comparison to a similar tragedy in 2018 involving the Humboldt Broncos, where 16 people died following a collision between a bus carrying a youth hockey team and a semi-trailer truck.
