MasterChef’s seven remaining amateur chefs were tasked with coming up with ‘so wrong that it’s right’ dishes, and they certainly rose to the challenge.
We’ve already seen cheese singles and evaporated milk in a mac and cheese recipe, which sent Josh home, but on the most recent episode, they made his dish look super tame with their ideas.
A particular standout was from Vanessa, who served up a black garlic brownie with anchovy condensed milk ice-cream.
You might be a little concerned if you found that in your friend’s freezer or on a menu, but her boundary-pushing was what the task asked for. In fact, when it came to serving time judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace thought she hadn’t pushed it far enough. Yes, you read that right!
John told Vanessa: ‘I think your brownie is really nicely made,’ but added he wanted a ‘crispier top.’
‘I don’t get a prominence of black garlic,’ he complained. He wanted more garlic!

Gregg echoed his sentiment, as he also wanted stronger flavouring.
He first told Vanessa that he was ‘grinding like crazy’ to get as many anchovy shavings as possible on top of the ice-cream.
‘I could smell it. It was disturbing,’ he stated before adding that it was, ‘very subtle, probably too subtle.’
*SPOILERS AHEAD*

Sadly for Vanessa, the subtlety of her dish meant that she wasn’t able to progress in the competition, and left with Robin who cooked seabass and vanilla.
MasterChef fans reacted to her combination of ingredients in a hilarious fashion.
One viewer wrote: ‘I believe this is one of the first signs of the apocalypse.’
‘The fish ice cream with my brownie is too subtle. ffs #MasterChef can you hear yourselves? dear lord, what’s wrong with clotted cream and strawberries with a brownie?!!!!!!’ added another.
‘I’m maybe uncultured with all this but anchovy ice cream. Please stop. #masterchef,’ begged one viewer
Chariya also pushed the boundaries with salted fish inside a cheesy scone with whipped bree.
Her unusual combination went down a little better with the judges.
Gregg was full of compliments telling her: ‘It’s absolutely delightful. Extraordinary.’ ‘Absloutely everything you’ve done is perfect,’ interjected John.
Not everyone at home agreed. One person wrote: ‘This round is minging.’ Don’t mince your words!

Omar served trout, scallops and mussels with a ham and pineapple broth, which also went down fairly well in the critique.
We think we’ll stick to cheese sandwiches for now.
MasterChef continues tomorrow at 8:30pm on BBC One.
