Paul Merson reckons he could have played for Chelsea on Sunday against Tottenham, given how ponderous their play was, while he has labelled Graham Potter’s dismal record so far as ‘extraordinary’.
It was another bad day out for the Blues as they were beaten 2-0 at Spurs in the Premier League, leaving them 10th in the table with just eight wins from 24 league games.
The pressure is piling on Potter as he struggles, and almost completely fails, to shape his string of new signings into a team that compete at the top end of the Premier League.
It is an undoubtedly difficult job that Potter has on his hands, but Merson was still stunned by how slow their play was and their complete lack of threat.
In fact, he thinks Chelsea at the moment are in the worse shape they have been for two decades.
‘It’s the worst I have seen at Chelsea in over 20 years,’ Merson told Sky Sports. ‘The fans are fuming now. I was at the game against Tottenham on Sunday and that’s the most hostile I have ever heard it among the Chelsea support.
‘They never looked like scoring at Spurs. I could have played for Chelsea on Sunday when they had the ball because it was so slow – and I’m 54!

‘I can’t run around anymore but I can pass the ball, and I could have played in the team. It was slow, sideways, backwards, I can play like that at my age.
‘Chelsea’s biggest game is Tottenham and it was lacklustre. They could still be playing now and they would not have scored. I cannot remember getting excited once in the game by them.’
The former Arsenal and England man wants to back Potter, declaring himself a fan of the former Brighton boss, but the stats are difficult to defend.
The blunt Blues have scored just once in their last six games, in all competitions, with two wins in 16 matches, which Merson says is clearly unacceptable.
‘I like Potter, they should give him a chance, but one goal in six games, one win in 11, two wins in 16. That is absolutely a no-go. It’s extraordinary,’ he said.
