Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League – there did seem to be a few issues (pic: Warner Bros.)
A reader is dismayed by Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League from the recent State of Play and details everything he thinks it got wrong.
I am not here to complain about this week’s State of Play. Plenty of people on the internet have done that already and all I will say is they’re probably right. I don’t know why it was terrible. Maybe it’s because of the Activision Blizzard acquisition, maybe its because PlayStation high command had the PlayStation VR2 forced on them by Sony bosses, or maybe it’s because Sony execs get very sleepy in the afternoon and they can’t be bothered to put on a decent show any more. I don’t know.
What I do know is that Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League looked so mind-bogglingly bad on every conceivable level that it went full circle and actually impressed me. I will now actively seek it out in the bargain bins, to which it is so obviously doomed, and hate play it. I’m now actually looking forward to doing so, especially if I can do it with a few friends and maybe even write a Reader’s Feature about it afterwards. I am going to guess that was not the reaction Rocksteady were hoping for though.
I doubt we’ll ever get confirmation (remember when developers used to do interviews?) that it used to be a microtransaction-filled games as a service hellhole, but it’s blindingly obvious that it was. In fact, I’m sure that’s one of the main reasons why characters called Captain Boomerang and King Shark are using ordinary, interchangeable guns. I’m not a comic book expert but let’s start there anyway.
Why are there only four characters? Everything I’ve seen of the Suicide Squad suggests they’re always a group of at least half a dozen people. Rocksteady had eight years to make this, and this is all they could manage? If there’s only four why do none of them have powers? Why does Captain Boomerang so rarely seem to use his boomerang? Why does King Shark not eat anyone at any point in the footage? Why has Deadshot got a jetpack? I have never seen him use one in any other portrayal. Why does Harley Quinn have a grappling hook and swing around like Spider-Man?
In short, why have they sent four characters with no powers to fight the Justice League? If you want to make a superhero game with street level characters then fine, but a) give them appropriate street level opponents and b) don’t have them all flying and jumping about the game world like Sonic the Hedgehog.
Also, why is none of the dialogue in the least bit funny or interesting? They’re obviously going for a James Gunn ultra flippant style but none of it works and none of the characters, good or bad, seem likeable. Harley Quinn and Captain Boomerang are pretty charismatic, and not entirely evil characters, in everything else I’ve seen them in but here they’re just character-in-video-game.
If someone told me to make a game based on Suicide Squad this is the exact opposite of what I’d go for. But let’s ignore the comic book aspect for now and move onto the mind-numbingly generic action and its complete lack of originality. I mean, this is just Crackdown but where someone seems to have eaten a packet of Starburst and puked on the city backdrop. This is an insultingly ugly looking game, that doesn’t look anything like the Arkham series, nothing like any comic I’ve seen, and certainly nothing like the movies.
You can see when they use their guns that there doesn’t seem to be any sense of weight or recoil to anything. Watch the bit where King Shark does a Hulk style ground pound and the impact seems so minor and unimpressive. I don’t know how the gunplay is going to be, you can’t tell that by just looking, but I’m not optimistic.
It needs to be absolutely top class though, as there doesn’t seem to be any other gameplay – no sign of puzzles, dialogue choices, or anything else. There are a lot of flashing green weakpoints on everything though, even the helicopters and other vehicles. So that suggests that the gameplay is going to be about as subtle as a brick and extremely repetitive.
And then we have the deal-sealers: the game is always-online, even in single-player, and there’s a battle pass already planned because, remember, this totally isn’t a microtransaction hellhole. I mean, I’m struggling to think of anything else they could have got more wrong.
So it’s a live service game, that looks extremely generic in terms of gameplay and makes very poor use of its licence. Make sure it’s full of bugs at launch, with bonus online lag, and I really do think they will have got absolutely everything wrong. My betting is it’ll be half price within two months.
