Will & Grace star Megan Mullally has confirmed that a spin-off focusing on her character Karen Walker nearly got made back in the mid-2000s.
Mullally played Grace’s (Debra Messing) assistant and friend for 11 seasons on the beloved sitcom, appearing in almost 250 episodes.
The award-winning comedy originally ran between 1998 and 2006, before being revamped in 2017 for an additional three seasons.
In the original ending, which was a flashforward to 20 years in the future, Karen was shown to be living with Jack (Sean Hayes), her long-time friend.
Now, in a fresh interview, Mullally, 64, has revealed that the revamped sitcom, which closed down production, wasn’t the only Will & Grace reboot on the table.
‘There was some talk of me doing a Karen spin-off after the original show,’ she told reporters for E! News earlier this week.

‘But I wanted to do a show with [Only Murders in the Building actor] Martin Short that was different’ – the show with Short, 72, also never got made.
The veteran actress also revealed that plans for a Karen spin-off were also discussed during the late 2010s, after Will & Grace was rebooted.
‘They talked to me about doing a Karen spinoff after the last one, too,’ she admitted, ‘but,’ she confessed, ‘it wasn’t really real’.
After Will & Grace, Mullally appeared in several comedy shows, including 30 Rock, Parks and Recreation, Bob’s Burgers, and the recently revived Party Down.

Party Down also starred Adam Scott, who went on to star in Parks and Recreation, as well as Glee’s Jane Lynch, who starred as Sue Sylvester in the musical drama.
Mullally also took time out to pay a loving tribute to her former Will & Grace co-star Leslie Jordan, who died suddenly aged 67 late last year.
Jordan, who appeared as Beverly Leslie in 17 episodes of Will & Grace, found a great following on Instagram before his untimely death in October.

‘Instagram made him feel like people were seeing him and getting him,’ Mullally said, ‘And they were, and they still are. That was his vehicle.’
Jordan crashed his car into a building in Hollywood and doctors revealed that ‘sudden cardiac dysfunction’ had ultimately caused the incident.
Will & Grace is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
