Suicide Squad – are you more or less interested after seeing the footage? (pic: WB Games)
Sony did warn there wouldn’t be much first party news in the latest State of Play and they weren’t lying, in a disappointing showcase.
It’s not considered good form to be too critical of any game at the preview stage, especially if you haven’t played it, but the best we can say about Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League is that by the end of the lengthy State of Play gameplay reveal we were beginning to think that maybe it might be okay.
The game has been in development for seemingly forever and yet developer Rocksteady has never show more than a few seconds of footage. This time you got plenty, confirming that the game is a four-player co-op, third person shooter where the whole DC Comics angle seems like an ill-convinced afterthought.
There’s only four playable characters, none of who have any superpowers, and all of who use guns, even though that’s usually not something you see characters like Harley Quinn and Captain Boomerang doing.
And if you weren’t tired enough of the evil Superman trope, how about evil the entire Justice League (except Wonder Woman)?
It all seems a very strange concept, and not at all what you’d expect from the makers of the Batman: Arkham series, but all the customisation and different guns seemed interesting enough. As well as unique abilities like Deadshot’s jetpack, Harley Quinn’s grapple hook, and Captain Boomerang’s borrowed Flash tech.
Despite the State of Play being almost 45 minutes long there was very little in the way of new announcements, the most significant being five previously unseen VR games, none of which were first party or particularly big budget. Which isn’t terribly encouraging considering the PlayStation VR2 only launched this week.
The Foglands seems to be some manner of first person roguelike, and actually looked quite interesting; Green Hell VR is a survival game set in the Amazon rainforest; Synapse is a shooter from the makers of Fracked; Journey To Foundation is what seems seem to be a shooter based on the works of Isaac Azimov (and not the recent TV show), which seems an odd use of the licence; and finally there was Before Your Eyes, which is already out on PC.
Non-VR games featured include Destiny 2: Lightfall and gorgeous-looking indie games Tchia, which is coming to PS Plus on day one.
Humanity, by the makers of Rez and Tetris Effect, looked pleasingly strange and original, to the point where we weren’t sure what’s actually going on. Although at times it seemed reminiscent of both Lemmings and Darwinia. You can find out for yourself though as a free demo is now available.
There were also new trailers for indie game Goodbye Volcano High, which seems to primarily be a rhythm action game; anime tie-in Naruto x Boruto Ultimate Ninja Storm Connections; and the console version of Baldur’s Gate 3, which got a release date of August 31.
Capcom had some of the only unequivocally interesting looking trailers, with footage of three new characters for Street Fighter 6: newcomer Lilly and old timers Zangief and Cammy.
The Resident Evil 4 remake looked as great as ever, with more proof that it’s keeping the cheesy tone of the original, plus a first tease for The Mercenaries mode.
And… that was it. Hopefully there’ll be another one soon because even if you did like the look of what was shown there was precious little that was completely new.
