Gabriel Martinelli admits he has been struggling with ‘mistakes’ in recent games after Manchester City overtook Arsenal in the title race.
In their first Premier League meeting of the season, the Citizens beat the Gunners 3-1 at the Emirates on Wednesday night, thanks to goals from Kevin De Bruyne, Jack Grealish and Erling Haaland.
It means that City have leapfrogged their opponents to go top of the table on goal difference, albeit Arsenal have a game in hand.
Arsenal have now failed to win any of their last four games, losing three, and while several players have struggled for form, Martinelli’s is particularly concerning.
The forward is yet to score in 2023, with his only goal contribution being an assist in the FA Cup win over League 1 side Oxford United.
This will be especially disappointing for Mikel Arteta given that the 21-year-old had scored seven and assisted two prior to the turn of the year, becoming a vital part of the club’s forward line.
‘I think I can improve. I think everyone in the team can improve,’ Martinelli told the Evening Standard after the City loss.

‘I always try to rewatch the game and see what my mistakes were and try to improve. It’s not going to be different with this game.
‘I am going to rewatch the game and see my mistakes and try to improve for the next game.’
But given his lack of form, it is very possible that the Brazil international could find himself dropped in favour of January signing Leandro Trossard for Arsenal’s next game at Aston Villa on Saturday.
‘For sure, it is going to be tough games [at Villa and Leicester]. But we are ready. We know our team and we go for it,’ he added.
‘There are still a lot of games to play. We know our strengths and we will bounce back. We are a family, and we are going to fight until the end.
‘We lost the game [against City], but we are Arsenal. We know how big we are and our qualities. We go to the next game to win and try to beat Villa.’
