Today’s news summary – Paper Talk
There’s a variety of stories on Tuesday’s front pages, but the Chinese spy balloons occupy a space on many of the newspaper’s front pages.
Chinese spy balloons
The Daily Mail says Rishi Sunak is under growing pressure to take a harder line on China, with Tory MPs saying he should formally designate Beijing a “threat.”
The i newspaper reports on the chancellor’s comments that the row is leading to calls to increase defence spending. Former military leaders are quoted by the paper as saying failure to do so with embolden Vladimir Putin.
Whilst the Times reports that the RAF will examine the US intelligence to see if it can improve its quick reaction force.
The Telegraph reports on the British police’s use of Chinese-made drones and the fears that it has sparked within the government. The paper says more than two-thirds of the drones are made by a Chinese firm that is blacklisted in the US.
The Daily Star leads with news a US general was not ruling out aliens as the unidentified objects shot out of the sky. The paper’s front splash depicts ET.
Labour is now the party of business
The Express leads with a council tax increase for millions of households, the paper says it’s a further blow to those already hit by higher bills. And the Independent reports on a former CBI President declaring Labour the party of business.
The Guardian leads with ex-Met cop Wayne Couzens – who pleaded guilty to charges of indecent exposure, that happened days before he kidnapped, raped and murdered Sarah Everard.
