Reiss Colwell (Jonny Freeman) first appeared in EastEnders at Dot Cotton (June Brown)’s funeral, and for poor, grieving Sonia (Natalie Cassidy) it was almost like Dot had sent her great nephew as a little gift, as the two hit it off immediately.
But although there was a romantic spark between them Sonia was left saddened after Reiss left Albert Square and apparently ghosted her.
He returned recently and helped Sonia as she struggled with a huge inheritance tax bill after inheriting Dot’s house.
To help pay the bills going forward, Reiss suggested that Sonia could get a lodger, hoping that it might be him.
But Sonia chose a man called Jed to be her new lodger – and Reiss has his nose put out of joint, as Jonny Freeman told Digital Spy.
‘Jed is everything Reiss isn’t, which is quite difficult for him – he’s aware he’s not an Adonis! So there’s a certain amount of jealousy and disappointment,’ he revealed.

And because of Reiss’s insecurities, he becomes convinced that feelings could develop between Sonia and Jed.
‘Reiss is certainly suspicious of him. And of course he has so much self-doubt that he can’t rule out the idea Sonia might fancy Jed!’ he said.
Jonny is convinced that Sonia and Reiss would make a good couple and his character’s feelings are genuine.
‘It’s hard for me to think that Reiss is suited to anyone,’ he mused, ‘but the chemistry between the two of them is genuine.
‘It’s not sexual fireworks, but it’s a beautiful, gentle warmth between two people who probably haven’t had the best of times.’

First he’s going to have to see off the challenge of Jed, and in coming episodes he sets out to do just that – which has got fans speculating that he could turn out to be a serial killer, with one Twitter user already lining up his first victims.
‘Wonder if Reiss will be a serial killer, he might kill off a huge character like Honey or Ben Mitchell or someone, even Karen Taylor maybe? Would be interesting to see. Obviously he wouldn’t be like Gray though,’ they speculated.
If Reiss is about to start a killing spree in Albert Square, Jonny is giving no indication of it as he seems more focused on how Reiss will get his romance with Sonia back on track.
‘There’s genuine affection there, but Reiss overthinks things,’ he said.
‘So where there hasn’t been any communication between them, Reiss has probably talked himself out of it.
‘It’s going to take some courage from him to get back in there.
‘Reiss really likes Sonia, but she took the lead – I’m not sure he would have!’
