His Dark Materials star Dafne Keen has addressed whether she would ever consider returning to play Lyra ‘Silvertongue’ Belacqua again – and she’s given fans a whole lot of hope.
The TV adaptation of Sir Philip Pullman’s book trilogy has come to an end with season 3 on BBC One, revealing the heartbreaking conclusion to Lyra and Will Parry’s (Amir Wilson) story.
The end of the tale is emotional to say the least, leaving many viewers speculating whether this is truly the end, or if the story could continue in some form in future.
While speaking to Metro.co.uk at the London premiere for the final episodes, Dafne was asked if she would be open to reprising the role, should an opportunity arise in the form of a drama based on Sir Philip’s Book of Dust book trilogy.
The Book of Dust takes place before, during and after the events of His Dark Materials, with the second book in the series – The Secret Commonwealth – following a 20-year-old Lyra.
At 18 years old, Dafne is already at the ideal age to play the older version of the character… so would she be up for it?

‘I love Lyra so I would never say no,’ she replied succinctly.
So if a Book of Dust TV adaptation were to receive a green light, it sounds as though it would simply take a phone call for Dafne to come on board!
Jane Tranter, an executive producer on His Dark Materials, previously spoke about how much she would love to bring The Book of Dust to life on screen.
The book trilogy consists of La Belle Sauvage, which features an infant Lyra in a tale set over a decade before the first book of His Dark Materials, Northern Lights.
The second book in the series is The Secret Commonwealth, while the third instalment is yet to be released.
‘As Philip Pullman calls it, there is an “equel” which is La Belle Sauvage and then there’s a sequel, which is The Secret Commonwealth,’ Jane said during a Q&A for the third season of His Dark Materials.

‘I have made absolutely no secret of the fact that I am really very keen to do The Book of Dust and Philip has already said that he would love us to do it. But he needs to finish the third book.’
The Bad Wolf production company founder continued: ‘We would love to do that, but you need to go out and ring the bell very loudly for that as well, so we can get the combined might of HBO and the BBC to say it’s an absolute done deal.’
His Dark Materials is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
