Sunday Papers – King’s coronation plans & David Carrick case leaves confidence in cops at ‘breaking point’
The Sunday papers report on a variety of topics, including the King’s upcoming coronation and Nadhim Zahawi’s tax error. The David Carrick case is another lead for several of the papers.
The Observer reports Nadhim Zahawi is “fighting for his political life” because of his tax affairs. Whilst the Sun on Sunday reports that the current row has cost him a knighthood. Mr Zahawi says he made mistakes but they were not deliberate and all his taxes have been paid,
The Sunday Times uses its front splash for an exclusive about Boris Johnson choosing Richard Sharp to be the Chairman of the BBC, shortly after the former banker helped him secure a loan guarantee.
The Observer’s second lead story is on children seeking asylum, the paper says according to a whistleblower, kids have been kidnapped by gangs from outside their hotel in Brighton and bungled into cars.
The Sunday Times reports on life on the front lines in Ukraine – which it says are similar to scenes from WW1. The paper says Russian conscripts are being treated as cannon fodder – sent to their deaths to run down Ukrainian ammunition. The editorial says it’s time for Germany to send tanks to Ukraine.
Confidence in cops ‘at breaking point’
Suella Braverman writes in the Sunday Telegraph that confidence in the police is “at breaking point” following the David Carrick case. She says officers should be able to be sacked more easily.
The Sunday People speaks to one of David Carrick’s victims – she is planning to sue the Met Police for allegedly failing to act on numerous complaints about his behaviour.
The Sunday Express says a senior government source has warned the scandal is the “tip of the iceberg” and more revelations are to come.
King’s coronation and royal news
The Sun on Sunday leads with reports Prince Andrew is planning to overturn a multi-million-pound settlement with Virginia Giuffre – the woman who accused him of sexual assault. Prince Andrew settled the civil case last year without making any admission of liability. He is now hoping to force a retraction or an apology which the paper says could clear the way for him to return to royal duties.
The Sunday Express says King Charles wants his coronation to unite the nation and lift the gloom. Whilst the Mirror calls it a “concert fit for a King” and The Sun on Sunday describes it as a “coronation treat.”
The Sunday Telegraph says refugees and NHS workers will be at the heart of the events. The paper says it will be a “majestic but inclusive” three-day celebration featuring a coronation choir made up of singers who are LGBT, deaf and living across the Commonwealth.
