Daniel Ricciardo has told his McLaren replacement Oscar Piastri what he needs to do if he is to have a successful debut Formula One season.
In one of the biggest and craziest transfer sagas in recent F1 history, McLaren signed highly-rated rookie Piastri from Alpine to replace fellow Australian Ricciardo for 2023.
Bar a sensational win in Italy, Ricciardo had severely struggled since moving to the British team in 2021 and after running out of patience they opted to pay out the rest of his contract, which has left him without a place on the grid for the new season.
The 33-year-old has since rejoined Red Bull as their reserve driver having enjoyed success with the team from 2014 to 2018.
Despite all this, Ricciardo insists there’s no bad blood between himself and Piastri and recently offered the 21-year-old some advice to ensure that his time at McLaren is a lot more successful.
‘I think just go out and drive. I know that sounds like a really lazy response but it’s just go and drive,’ he told the Beyond the Grid podcast.
‘Learn, be a sponge, but drive.

‘Don’t see the bar too high for yourself, if you end up doing better than maybe what you thought, awesome, but just take it race by race.
‘But as long as you are learning and you feel like you are improving every race, I think that is all you can kind of ask for yourself.
‘I think also even if we didn’t quite get it right from my side, with McLaren I think they still would’ve learnt a bunch from our two years, and maybe things where we deviated, went a little wrong or sideways.
‘So, I think all that, that knowledge can be passed on to Oscar and I think they will. I would like to think they will have a little bit of a head start from that point of view.’
Formula 2 champion Piastri will make his long-awaited F1 debut in March at the season opener in Bahrain, with McLaren set to unveil their 2023 car, the MCL37, on February 13th.
