Final Fantasy 16 – probably coming to PC but you can’t be sure (pic: Square Enix)
Maverick producer Yoshi-P has said that fans should stop asking about a PC version of Final Fantasy 16 and just buy a PS5 instead.
Although it’s common enough for third party games to be exclusive to either Xbox or PlayStation they’re usually only console exclusives and still come out on PC straight away, or after a short delay, but that doesn’t seem to be the case with Final Fantasy 16.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake was originally released only on PlayStation 4 in April 2020, but by June the next year it was on PlayStation 5 and six months after that it arrived on PC. So far, however, there’s no confirmation that Final Fantasy 16 will follow a similar pattern.
This has frustrated PC fans, who have been trying to get an answer from Square Enix as to what’s going on, even going so far as to ask producer Naoki Yoshida, aka Yoshi-P, during a mah-jong livestream he was participating in – but the answer was not what they wanted to hear.
The only thing fans know for sure is that Final Fantasy 16 is not going to stay a PlayStation 5 exclusive forever, as the most recent trailer said it won’t be on any other format until after December 31, 2023. The implication being it will be after that.
According to Yoshida though, via Twitter fan Genki_JPN, ‘Nobody said a word about a PC version releasing.’
Instead, his advice was: ‘Don’t worry about that, buy a PS5!’
Given the laugh afterwards he seems to be joking to some degree, but either way there doesn’t seem to be any sign of him or anyone else at Square Enix confirming a PC version.
The best guess is that it will be out around six months after the PlayStation 5 version. Since that’s out on June 22 a PC release early next year seems likely.
Without any official confirmation though that’s certainly not guaranteed.
