Today’s news summary – Paper Talk
Friday’s front pages are dominated by the massive claims from leaked excerpts of Prince Harry’s news memoir – Spare. The book leaked in the US first before being sold early in a bookshop in Spain – causing journalists to fly out and buy a copy and then translate it to English.
Harry’s book Spare is set for release early next week, and the former royal has four interviews lined up to promote it. The UK interview kicks off at 9 pm on Sunday.
Harry’s bombshell allegations in Spare
The Daily Telegraph picks up on Harry’s claim that the King refused to allow Meghan Markle to join him at Balmoral as the Queen was dying.
The paper reports that Harry also attacks Camilla, sayin she “sacridiced” him by leaking details of a conversations with Prnce William to the press “as part of a concerted campaign” to marry Charles – something neither William or Harry wanted.
The i newspaper’s front page calls it the monarchy’s “worst crisis in 30 years.” The paper picks up on Harry’s comments that he referred to his son as the “spare” and made jokes about whether he was Harry’s real dad.
The Daily Mail says “oh spare us” and reports that Harry describes Prince William as “beloved brother” and “arch-nemesis.” The paper claims he uses the memoir to paint his father as “emotionally-stunted and ineffectual old man” who “still carries around his faviourite teddy bear.”
The Daily Telegraph calls Harry’s many allegations “devestating.” Whilst the Sun say they’re “rocked the Royal Family” and “plunged Buckingham Palace into crisis mode,” although Palace officials haven’t commented on any of the claims.
The Sun accuses Harry of choosing a “destructive, vengeful path” by “throwing his own family under a bus for millions of dollars”. The paper says Harry’s friends are “begging him to stop for his own good.”
The Times has a slightly more positive take on it. A royal insider calls it “exhausting and exasperating, but not distracting” and claims the whole mess “will burn itself out”.
Will Harry be able to reconcile with his family?
Harry’s made it clear he wants to reconcile with the royal family. He told ITV’s Tom Brady that he wants his father and brother “back.”
But the Daily Mail says he must end the “tawdry and upsetting accusations” if he wants to start on the “painful path” to reconciliation.
Whilst the i claims the book will “shatter hopes of a truce” between the brothers, the Express says there is now “no chance” Harry and the royals will resolve their issues.
Sources speak to left-wing paper Daily Mirror which claims Harry “will never be forgiven” and “will be labelled a traitor.” The paper’s headline reads: “It’s all over now”.
The Independent features a large image of the brothers with their backs to each other at the statue unveiling of their late mother Princess Diana. The paper’s main story is about Harry’s claim that William physically attacked him.
