Horrific death of young woman shocks India
A young woman who was killed in a hit-and-run and dragged along the road for miles has shocked and outraged India.
The woman, 20 was an events manager who was returning from work in the capital of Dehli when her scooter collided with a car.
Police say the driver of the car, which had four other people in it, kept driving for miles with the young woman’s body being dragged along the road.
CCTV footage has shown the woman’s body under the car, being dragged along.
Hit-and-run death in Dehli
A search operation for the car was launched after police received two calls on Sunday morning (1 January 2023) – one regarding a woman’s body being dragged along the road by a Maruti Baleno car and the other which reported a woman’s body being found in the road in north Dehli.
After a massive manhunt, the driver and car were located and the driver was arrested.
The driver has been accused of culpable homicide and causing death by negligence.
Police say the accused borrowed a friend’s car on the night of 31 December into the early hours of January 1 2023. They added that the accused abandoned the body on the road and fled the scene.
Police are continuing to gather information and say the accused will be taken back to the scene to verify events. The car will be examined by a forensic team and a dummy will be used to verify claims they didn’t hear the woman scream because they were playing loud music.
Woman was sexually assaulted – victim’s family
The family of the woman who was killed in the horror incident say their loved one was sexually assaulted before being killed.
The victim’s mum questioned why the victim had no clothes on and her uncle claimed the condition of the body “shows that she has been sexually assaulted”, the Times of India newspaper reported.
Protests were held outside the Sultanpuri police station as they demanded a thorough investigation and justice for the victim.
Police have not yet confirmed if the woman had been raped or assaulted by said her body on Monday was sent for a post-mortem investigation and fresh charges could be added depending on the results of the post-mortem.
The woman’s death has also sparked a political row in the capital as the Aam Aadmi Party – which governs Dehli, has been protesting against the federal government over what they call weak security in the city.
