East 17 were a band ahead of their time, founding member Terry Coldwell believes.
The group is best-known for 1994 Christmas number one Stay Another Day, which brought East 17 massive fame and returns to the charts each year.
They also found success with the likes of House of Love and Let It Rain, and Terry – the last founding member still part of the band – believes their early songs are ‘timeless.’
In an interview with Bang Showbiz, the star explained that should a person listen to House of Love, released in 1992, ‘it’s so relevant to what is going on in the world today.
‘Lyrically it’s timeless.’
He went on: ‘I think a lot of the East 17 tracks, they were so different to any other artist around at the time. You can listen to them now and a lot of them fit into today’s music scene.’

While fellow founding members Tony Mortimer, John Hendy and Brian Harvey have all left the band, East 17 is still going, with Terry seeing this as a positive thing.
‘I’ve driven East 17 forward,’ he insisted, adding the band are ‘brilliant’ on stage.
And despite him being the only original in the band, ‘we’re bringing back the nostalgia of the 90s to people and we’re brilliant at it.’

Elsewhere in the interview, Terry admitted he himself is a nostalgic person as he still owns the’ ‘iconic’ white coat from the Stay Another Day music video and brings it out every Christmas.
The Christmas hit is unique in that it was not written in the hopes of being a Christmas banger, and instead relates to loss and grief.
Written by bandmate Tony following the death by suicide of his brother Ollie, Terry said he receives ‘loads of messages’ every year saying the song has been played at someone’s funeral.

‘We recorded the demo and then it went to our producers… and they stuck in these tubular bells and made it all Christmassy,’ he told Metro.co.uk.
‘We got it back and were all, “Wow!” No one thought it would be a massive Christmas hit at the time, though.’
