Martin Compston and Tony Curran’s emotional new drama Mayflies has left viewers bawling their eyes out.
The Line of Duty star, 38, and Your Honour actor Tony, 53, follows Andrew O’Hagan’s book on friendship.
The two-part adaptation, which is filmed in and around Glasgow, focuses on assisted dying, with the synopsis reading: ‘The friendship that defines your life – and will push your loyalty to the limits.’
The series begins with Jimmy (Martin) and Tully (Tony) in Glasgow in 1986 forming a bond based on music, movies and rebellion, all culminating in an epic weekend in Manchester.
Thirty years later, the two are drawn back together when Tully calls up Jimmy with news that will test their friendship to its limit.

The touching story has had viewers feeling pretty emotional, with one writing: ‘Might have to stop watching #Mayflies. Cannot stop crying ffs. It is so good though, spot on with all the casting, the acting is incredible.’
‘What an absolutely heartbreaking yet heartwarming story #Mayflies is,’ another penned, adding: ‘I felt every tear and shared every laugh. What a powerhouse of a drama.’
‘My eyes are nippin’, my head is thumpin’, and my heart is broken. Absolutely brilliant and a wee cameo from Andrew himself Well played @TonyCurran69 @martin_compston.’
Another praised: ‘‘Mayflies’ wow! Absolutely brilliant, hard hitting but beautifully done.’
Speaking about the series, Martin told the BBC: ‘It’s one of those ones when you get it, you think this is just beautiful writing.
‘And then it isn’t until you’re actually on set day after day you’re going, oh man, what have I signed up for here, in the best possible way, because every scene for the older one of us is really emotionally challenging.
‘I’ve said this before, it’s the most emotionally present I’ve ever been on a job.

‘We’ve got different mechanics and tools as actors to get you where you need to be for emotional scenes and I’ve killed off all my family and friends in my head over the years and remembered dogs passing away and all that thing.
‘But with this, just with the subject matter and the talent of the cast around you, you didn’t need to go anywhere, you could just be present.

‘And also having somebody like a close friend Tony Curran going with it, it didn’t feel like you were going through it alone so in that sense it was lovely.’
The series also stars Ashley Jensen as Tully’s wife Anna and Tracy Ifeachor as Jilly’s wife Iona, with Tom Glynn-Carney and Rian Gordon play the younger versions of Tully and Jimmy.
Mayflies is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
