Call The Midwife fans admitted they were ‘sobbing’ after tuning into the festive edition of the beloved BBC programme.
After moving the clinic into new premises, the midwives treated former patient Rhoda Mullucks (Liz White) from series six, whose child was born with limb defects due to Thalidomide, and a single mother who was recently released from prison.
Elsewhere in the episode, there was a festive talent competition to help raise money for those affected by the train crash in series 11, while Sister Frances (Ella Bruccoleri) needed treatment for having a bike accident.
But fans were moved to tears when Matthew Aylward (Olly Rix) finally managed to pop the question to Trixie Franklin (Helen George) after a bungled proposal.
Matthew had first attempted to get down on one knee on Christmas Day but was interrupted with the need to attend a medical emergency.
However, on New Year’s Eve on a romantic stroll along the Thames, Matthew finally had the moment as he told Trixie how much he loved her.
As the London skyline glistened in the background, Matthew said: ‘Trixie, I love you and I love you for who you are.
‘I love you for places you’ve been and come back from and loved you for all the things you’ve shown me and all the places we’ve yet to go. Will you come with me Trixie? And be my wife?’
Matthew then got on one knee and opened the ring box, before exclaiming: ‘I can get you sapphire if you’d rather? Or an emerald or ruby? All I care about is.’

In a display of love, Matthew then chucked the ring with a bemused Trixie running after it and managing to retrieve it on the river banks.
‘Will you marry me Trixie,’ Matthew asks, with a delighted Trixie replying instantly: ‘Yes.’
Fan were quick to react to the emotional scenes on Twitter, with one writing: ‘I’m watching #CallTheMidwife and crying my eyes out. Big snottery tears.’
