Arsenal’s disallowed goal against Manchester United at Old Trafford in September is one of six mistakes made by VAR in the Premier League this season, according to reports.
Gabriel Martinelli’s early goal against United was ruled out following an intervention by VAR as Martin Odegaard’s soft challenge on Christian Eriksen was deemed a foul and highlighted to referee Paul Tierney.
However, ESPN report that an independent panel, which consists of three former players, plus one representative for both the Premier League and PGMOL, subsequently reviewed the decision and that was a mistake to rule out the goal.
‘In my opinion, it’s never a foul,’ Odegaard said of the decision after Arsenal’s 3-1 defeat to United. ‘The referee sees it and plays play on.
‘It’s a soft challenge and for VAR to come in it has to be clear and obvious. That’s been said a lot of times.
‘On the camera, you can always make it look a little bit worse, but, for me, that was never a foul so it’s frustrating.’

Chelsea, meanwhile, benefitted from a VAR error as Maxwel Cornet’s late equaliser for West Ham at Stamford Bridge was incorrectly ruled out for Jarrod Bowen’s challenge on Edouard Mendy in the build up.
Douglas Luiz’s red card for violent conduct against Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic was also among the six VAR errors, and Aston Villa were able to get the midfielder’s three-game ban overturned.

Elsewhere, Tyrick Mitchell’s own goal, which ruled out for a foul in the build-up by Newcastle United midfielder Joe Willock on Crystal Palace goalkeeper Vicente Guaita, has been another VAR mistake picked up by the independent panel.
Brentford’s penalty against Nottingham Forest after Dean Henderson’s foul Yoane Wissa is now considered a VAR error.
Meanwhile, Lucas Digne’s handball which conceded a penalty in Aston Villa’s 3-1 defeat to Crystal Palace in August has also been ruled as a VAR mistake.
