Manchester United are yet to trigger a one-year extension clause in David De Gea’s contract because they want the Spaniard to sign a new deal that would lower his salary.
The 32-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and he’s keen to stay at Old Trafford.
United have the option of extending his deal by a further 12 months thanks to an extension clause in his contract but they’re yet to do so.
That’s despite the fact that the club have triggered similar clauses in the deals of team-mates Luke Shaw, Marcus Rashford, Diogo Dalot and Fred.
But the Telegraph claim there is reason behind United’s decision to treat De Gea differently.
The goalkeeper signed a five-year deal in 2018 for a then-club record salary of £375,000-a-week.

That made De Gea the highest paid goalkeeper in world football but his performances have been mixed since signing that contract.
De Gea’s performances have improved this season and he’s shown a good adaptation to Erik ten Hag’s methods, with the Dutchman keen for his keeper to play out from the back.
Nevertheless, the Spaniard’s stock has dipped significantly in recent years and he was completely overlooked by Luis Enrique for the World Cup.
And the Telegraph say United want De Gea’s next deal to reflect his status, with the club keen for him to agree to lower terms.
Should United activate De Gea’s extension clause, they would be committing to another 18 months of paying him £375,000-a-week.
They therefore want him to sign a new deal on lower terms, to save money in the long run.
