Liverpool hero Steve Nicol thinks the club should sign Barcelona star and former Manchester United forward Memphis Depay in January to remedy their injury crisis.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have suffered heavily with injuries this season, particularly with their midfielders, which has led to many underwhelming results and the Reds currently sixth in the table, seven points off the top four.
However, as the Premier League prepares to resume after the conclusion of the World Cup, Liverpool are now facing another crisis with the fitness of their forwards.
Both Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz are expected to be out for many months with calf and knee problems respectively.
While a central-midfielder remains the priority for Klopp, acquiring a new forward, even on the short-term, must also now take priority, especially with Roberto Firmino also out of contract at the end of the season.
And Nicol believes that Depay could be the perfect solution to his problems, as the 28-year-old is available for a cut-price deal, with Barcelona hoping to shift their player before his contract is up in the summer.
‘I mean, why not?’ former Liverpool right-back Nicol told ESPN.

‘The guy has got ability. Barcelona, considering the situation they are in financially, maybe it could work.
‘If Liverpool had Depay on the bench to come on, then that wouldn’t be a bad thing.
‘Considering how difficult these things always seem to work out, it probably seems unlikely. But as far as being a good idea, then absolutely.’
Depay joined United for £25million from PSV in 2015 with high expectations but would go onto score just two league goals before being sold 18 months later to Lyon.
He rebuilt his reputation in France, scoring 76 goals and making 55 assists in 178 games, before moving to Barcelona last year on a free, but things haven’t worked out in Spain amid Xavi’s rebuilding of the club.
Depay is still a very capable forward however, scoring for the Netherlands at the Qatar World Cup during their run to the quarter-finals despite suffering with fitness problems throughout the tournament.
