The earthquake was at a depth of 16.1km, USGS said, adding that it struck 12km west-southwest of Ferndale, California.
TV producer Andy Clausen tweeted that he had received an alert to his phone warning of the quake.
He said: ‘If you’re in the Bay Area, you may have gotten an earthquake Shake Alert on your phone, a minute before this 6.1 quake that just hit off the Northern California coast!’ We got the alert here in Oakland, but no shaking felt.’
