Rio Ferdinand has named the Manchester United player he feels is a ‘seven or seven-and-a-half out of 10’ every game.
Former United defender Ferdinand was quizzed about the club’s current centre-backs Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez, who meet in the 2022 World Cup final on Sunday as France face Argentina.
Martinez arrived at Old Trafford this summer in a £56.7m deal from Ajax while Varane joined from Real Madrid last year.
Both men have enjoyed success at international level with Varane helping France win the last World Cup in 2018 while Martinez lifted the 2021 Copa America.
Speaking about Varane, Ferdinand told his YouTube channel: ‘His trophy cabinet… he’s going to have to invest in a carpenter to build him a new one the way he is going!
‘He’s a great player. What’s impressive about Raphael Varane is that he goes about his work very quietly.
‘He’s a steady seven, seven-and-a-half [out of 10] every game.
‘Especially when we are talking about France here [in Qatar] – he hasn’t been opened up at all here in this tournament.
‘He came in off the back of an injury as well. He just goes about his work very efficiently.
‘Ibrahima Konate he looks very good with. It’s whoever plays alongside him.’
Asked about Martinez, Ferdinand added: ‘Every time he’s played he has been top, he has been brilliant.
‘He made a block in the game against Mexico – which was a guaranteed goal if he didn’t block it.
‘The celebration with the goalkeeper and the other defenders… He has the passion, he has the emotion.’
United’s season gets back up and running on Wednesday as they host Burnley in the last 16 of the Carabao Cup.
Erik ten Hag’s side return to Premier League action on December 27 as they welcome Nottingham Forest to Old Trafford.
