Bernice questioned her health after experiencing memory loss (Picture: ITV)
Emmerdale’s Bernice Blackstock (Samantha Giles) recently feared she was developing dementia after experiencing memory loss and a change in mood.
After a trip to the doctors, she was told by Liam (Jonny McPherson) that this was the start of her menopause.
Along with relief that her brain fog and sudden mood swings aren’t down to dementia or a brain tumour or any of the other awful things she’d been worrying about, Bernice didn’t exactly welcome the news that she’s going through menopause.
The storyline is quite a contrast to what we usually see from Bernice. The character is known for her comedic traits and iconic one liners and for Samantha Giles, she feels this adds so much to Bernice’s experience:
‘I think it’s important to show that someone a bit like her, quite a ditsy character and comedic character, this is a serious thing that’s happening to her’, she said, speaking during an episode of Lorraine.

‘You’re showing the odd and funny sides to it as well which is important, because there’s a funny side to everything’.
‘Bernice has got the rage which I identify with!’, she added.
‘We’ll see as we go into Christmas and beyond, Bernice does eventually realise that she can’t do it on her own and there is absolutely no shame in that.’
Samantha also reflected on her return to the soap, saying: ‘I’m really fortunate. I’ve been asked back several times and it’s a great place to work.
‘It feels like home in a way. I’m like a boomerang – I go and do other things then come back!’
