Tyler Perry has recalled his shocked reaction when Prince Harry and Meghan asked him if he would be their daughter Lilibet’s godfather.
When the Duke and Duchess of Sussex first moved to Los Angeles from Canada, having left the UK and their roles as senior working members of the royal family, comedian and actor Tyler offered the couple a place to stay.
His offer of support came despite him never having met the couple, after he reached out to Meghan ahead of her wedding to say that he was ‘praying’ for her amid her fractured relationship with her father, Thomas Markle Sr.
Meghan and Harry’s new Netflix documentary has shed light on their friendship with Tyler, with footage filmed inside the house where they lived in LA.
In episode six of the docu-series, the 53-year-old remembered a phone call he had with the couple after the birth of their daughter, who they welcomed on June 4 2021, two years after their son Archie was born on May 6 2019.
‘We’ll call and we’ll chat and we’ll talk about silly things. And they were pretty serious on the phone,’ Tyler recollected.

‘I go, “Okay, what’s going on?” They said, “Well, we’d like for you to be Lili’s godfather.” I go, “Whoa.” I had to take a minute to take that in, and I thought, “I’d be honoured. I’d absolutely be honoured.”’

After getting off the phone to Meghan and Harry, he ‘took it all in’ and ‘then called them back’.

He continued: ‘I go, “Uh, hold on a second. Does this mean we got to go over there and do all of that in the church with them and figure all of that out, because I don’t want to do that. Maybe we can do a little private ceremony here and let that be that, and if you have to do it there, then that’s okay.”’
Harry also shared who he believes his children resemble, as he sees a lot of Meghan in his son, and a lot of his own mother in Lilibet.
‘I think at the moment, I see a lot of my wife in Archie, and I see a lot of my mum in Lili. She’s very Spencer-like. She’s got the same blue eyes,’ the duke said.
‘Blue, blue, blue eyes,’ Meghan chimed in, as Harry added that Lilibet has ‘sort of like, a golden-reddish hair.’
Harry & Meghan is available to watch on Netflix.
