WARNING: Spoilers for the While Lotus season two finale below!
The White Lotus season two finale finally hit our screens last night with twists and turns galore as the holidaymakers left the luxury Sicily resort.
Well, most of them…
Viewers were left shaken after Tanya Hunt (Jennifer Coolidge) accidentally plummeted to her death while trying to escape a swanky yacht, having killed most of her former pals on board.
Things took a huge turn when her assistant, Porta (Haley Lu Richardson), called her in a frenzy and informed her that there was a secret plot for Niccoló (Stefano Gianino) to murder her, so that her husband Greg would be left with her fortune.
In true form, she spiraled in legendary scenes, which led to her locking herself in a bedroom, before literally shooting her way out of it, blasting anyone who came in her way – including Tom Hollander’s Quentin.

Sadly, it didn’t end well for Tanya, who accidentally drowned while attempting to jump into a tender boat anchored beside the yacht – instead of using the stairs at the back.
However, while we were all open-mouthed at watching the tense situation unfold, some eagle-eyed fans spotted a bizarre subtitle issue in a post-episode segment with creator Mike White, which may have added a brutal layer to her death.
In a glimpse of the scene where Tanya was panicking for her life and locked herself away, a subtitle read as though Greg called out her name – despite not being on board at the time.
Viewers rushed to Reddit to discuss the finale, and whether this could mean that he was secretly hidden on the yacht to watch his wife’s demise.

‘Subtitles from the scene where Tanya is in the bedroom on the yacht – just an error, or was Greg hiding on the boat somewhere and escaped?,’ a user questioned, posting a screengrab of the closed captioning.
‘I was waiting for him to pop out during that entire scene!!! Imagine if she got to kill him before she died,’ a follower replied.
A baffled viewer queried: ‘So did she kill him???’
‘I think he got away,’ one responded. ‘I think he was on the top floor of the boat with the captain.’
‘Subtitles dry snitched greg on that goddamn boat #TheWhiteLotus,’ a fan on Twitter added.
However, others suggested that this could just be an error, or a hallucination from Tanya.
‘I noticed that but had to be a mistake? The whole point was for Greg to be away from the murder so he’d have an alibi, wouldn’t make sense to be there,’ a Reddit user explained.
‘I’m assuming it was a mistake, she would have recognized his voice if it was him,’ a viewer said.

‘She was panicking and heard his voice in her head (knowing that he wants her dead). He wasn’t actually there,’ one deduced.
Tanya became a firm fan favorite for her eccentric outlook on life, and her love for the finer things – and Jennifer played the character to perfection, taking home an Emmy earlier this year for her portrayal.
Showrunner Mike spoke of killing the character off in such a savage way, and defended his shocking plot twist in a new interview.
‘Maybe that’s the journey for her: a journey to death,’ he told TV Line. ‘Not that I really wanted to kill Tanya, because I love her as a character and obviously love Jennifer, but I just felt like we’re going to Italy, [and] she’s such a diva, a larger-than-life female archetype. It just felt like we could devise our own operatic conclusion to Tanya’s life and her story.’

‘It felt like she needed to give her best fight back, and that she, in a way, had some kind of victory over whoever was conspiring to get rid of her.
‘So it just made me laugh to think she would take out this whole cabal of killers and that, after she’s successfully done that, she just dies this derp-y death. It just felt like that’s so Tanya.’
