Wayne Rooney has told Harry Kane to ‘keep his head up’ after missing a crucial penalty in England’s World Cup quarter-final defeat to France.
Kane had levelled the game early into the second-half, firing home a penalty after Bukayo Saka was fouled in the box.
That goal moved the England captain onto 53 goals for his country, levelling the record set by previous skipper Rooney.
After Olivier Giroud had put France ahead again, Kane had another opportunity to equalise from the spot, after Mason Mount went down, and with it break the all-time goalscoring record.
But it was not to be, as the Tottenham striker, usually so reliable from the spot, blazed his effort over with France seeing out the 2-1 win.
It was a devastating loss for England, with Kane inconsolable after the full-time whistle.
Three Lions and Manchester United legend Rooney shared his thoughts on Twitter, saying: ‘Absolutely gutted for the lads but proud of the way they’ve played this tournament and they should be proud.
‘Congratulations to Harry Kane on equalling the record, he’ll be on his own soon and couldn’t think of anyone better to take over.
‘Keep your head up Harry.’
The penalty miss will no doubt be the main talking point from this game, with England midfielder Jordan Henderson adding on ITV: ‘We know how many penalties Harry has scored for us, how many goals he has contributed to even get us here.
‘He will be stronger for this in the future. He is a world-class striker and our captain, he will bounce back.’
