The World Cup 2022 is in full swing, and the England football team – led by manager Gareth Southgate – will be hopeful of ending 50-plus years of hurt by going all the way to lifting the trophy.
England have only ever won the competition once but came close in Russia 2018 when Harry Kane captained the side to the semi-finals.
The Three Lions are now facing a crunch quarter-final clash with France in Qatar, with the side just three games away from adding World Cup number two to their trophy collection.
But just when did England last win the World Cup, and what was the final score?

England claimed a 4-2 victory over West Germany on July 30, 1966, making them the FIFA World Cup champions that year.

An audience of 32.3 million viewers originally tuned in to watch the Fifa World Cup Final between England and West Germany, which took place at Wembley arena in London – with a crowd of 96,924 in the stands.
The nail biting match, which went into overtime after German player Wolfgang Weber scored an 89th-minute equaliser to tie the game, is one of the most watched television programmes in history.
The England squad was led by team captain, central defender Bobby Moore and the winning goals were scored by just two players; Martin Peters and legendary hat-trick hero Geoff Hurst.
Hurst sealed England’s victory that day, scoring the two extra-time goals that won England the 1966 World Cup title.
