Death Stranding 2 is official real (pic: Kojima Productions)
Hideo Kojima has offered the first look at Death Stranding 2 and confirmed that he’s only working on one other game at the moment.
The one thing you’d expect of any new trailer from Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima is to not understand a thing that’s going on, and in that sense the official reveal of Death Stranding 2, at The Game Awards 2022, did not disappoint.
It wasn’t quite as incomprehensible as the reveal of the first game, at least for anyone that’s played it, with the trailer seeming to introduce a new group of bad guys, with the tagline question asking whether it was a good idea to try and connect everyone after all.
What else is going on, particularly with all the tentacles, is anyone’s guess but returning stars Léa Seydoux and Norman Reedus are a reassuring sight, even if the latter’s grey hair seems to suggest a significant amount of time has past since the original game.
Kojima himself appeared on stage to christen the trailer but he didn’t offer any more information, merely suggesting that the footage is filled with hints and clues about the final game.
There was no indication of a release date, or even year, and nothing about any console exclusivity.
He did reveal, however, that he’d written the story before the pandemic but after experiencing lockdown he threw everything out and started the whole story again from scratch.
‘I didn’t want to predict any more future, so I rewrote it,’ he joked, in reference to both the original game’s portrayal of a society locked indoors and, perhaps, the notoriously prescient speech about fake news in Metal Gear Solid 2.
One of the most interesting revelations was towards the end, when Kojima revealed that he is working on one other ‘completely new’ game, which he is currently ‘experimenting on’. He didn’t say what it is but given the leaks he can only be talking about survival horror Overdrive.
He mentioned that he was working on other ‘visual projects’ but implied they weren’t games, which suggests that Overdrive and the cloud game he’s working on with Microsoft are one and the same.
Unless he was being purposefully economical with the truth, which isn’t entirely unlikely, that seems to put pay to the idea he’s working on three or more new titles.
