The latest news from the World Cup also dominates this morning’s news – as Raheem Sterling has reportedly asked the Football Association (FA) to look at his potential return to Qatar. Iran executes anti-government protester
On Thursday morning, Iran officials hanged Mohsen Shekari who was found guilty of “enmity against God,” according to state media. Shekari was accused of being a “rioter” who blocked the main road in Tehran on 25 September. He was also accused of wounding a member of the paramilitary Basij force with a knife. So far, 11 people have been sentenced to death in connection with the mass protest that started after the death of a young woman Mahsa Amini – who died in police custody after being arrested for wearing her hijab ‘improperly’.

Bali bomber freed after serving just over half of sentence
Umar Patek – the man who crafted the bombs that killed and injured scores – has been released from an Indonesian prison. The bombings claimed the lives of some 202 people from 21 nations. It remains Indonesia’s deadliest terror attack.
Officials say Patek has been deradicalised. After the bombing he spent 10 years on the run, before being sentenced in 2012 to 20 years. He served just over half of his sentence.

What do the newspapers say?
Several newspapers lead on the announcement that Border Force staff will be striking for eight days over Christmas – the news comes off the heels of the announcement of the ambulance strikes. The many strikes set to take place this winter are involved in a row about pay, conditions and jobs.
Most of the papers cover the announcement that the former health secretary Matt Hancock won’t stand as an MP at the next general election. The MP recently took part in the hit ITV show I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here! Much to the disappointment of fellow politicians and the public.
Some of the papers pick up on comments by a government health advisor that girls should be taught that their fertility is time-limited.
And several of the tabloids look ahead at the release of Harry and Meghan’s show – the newspapers are published before the release of the first three episodes (08:00 Thursday).
