Cody Gakpo has claimed that he has not heard from Manchester United amid rumours the 2022 World Cup star could move to Old Trafford in January.
The prolific forward has been linked with the Red Devils since the summer and it has been repeatedly reported that United came close to signing him during the last transfer window but were unable to agree a deal with PSV.
Fellow Premier League sides Leeds and Southampton were also closely linked with Gakpo as the window drew to a close.
However, given his incredible form for his club, where he has scored 13 goals and made 17 assists in just 24 games so far this season, and the Netherlands, where he has three goals in four World Cup games, United are said to be ready to move again for the 23-year-old.
Signing a new forward has become a priority for Erik ten Hag thanks in large to the high-profile departure of Cristiano Ronaldo.
Valued at £40million, before Qatar 2022 kicked-off mind, Gakpo is reportedly top of a transfer shortlist that also includes Chelsea outcast Christian Pulisic and Atletico Madrid star Joao Felix.
While in Qatar, Gakpo has been repeatedly asked about his future with so many contrasting reports speculating that a move to United is very close, but has remained pretty coy on the matter.
That was until Wednesday, when he made the surprising revelation that he has not yet had any contact from Old Trafford, though he would be interested in the transfer.
‘That was a tough period,’ Gakpo told NRC, reflecting on the summer where, amid lots of transfer talk, PSV failed to qualify for the Champions League group stage.
‘I learned from that. I’m going to do it differently. What comes, that comes. Suppose you want to go from RKC to PSV, but that club is not coming. Then you can panic.
‘I thought about Manchester United, but when that didn’t happen, I couldn’t remember. And I started to doubt. Leeds United did come. Should I go there?
‘Now I’ll wait and see. I haven’t heard from Manchester United yet. When they come, I’ll think about it. I also seek the help of God in these decisions.’
In the meantime, Gakpo is preparing for the Netherlands’ quarter-final clash with Argentina on Friday.
