Cristiano Ronaldo’s confidante Piers Morgan has revealed the Manchester United outcast is far from guaranteed to sign for Al-Nassr.
The 37-year-old is currently a free agent after his second spell at Old Trafford was cut short after he was found to be in breach of contract following his explosive tell all interview with Morgan.
Ronaldo appears to be on the brink of signing a lucrative contract with Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia which could reportedly earn him €500 million over the course of a two-year deal.
Morgan, however, believes those claims are premature and Ronaldo is still confident that a strong showing during the latter stages of the World Cup could yet earn him a move to a team with aspirations of winning the Champions League this season.
‘He thinks that if he does well at this World Cup, he’ll get what he really wants, which is a club in the Champions League that extends his record and his legacy,’ Morgan told the Daily Telegraph.
‘It’s not about money at this stage of his career.
‘It comes down to a burning desire to play football at the highest level, to break records and win trophies. And he has done that in more countries than any other player in history.’
Ronaldo had pushed to leave United in the summer transfer window but despite the efforts of his agent, Jorge Mendes, to find a new club, several sides across Europe passed up the chance of a deal.
And it appears Ronaldo has faced a similar situation this winter as Chelsea and Bayern Munich both distanced themselves from a move this month.
When asked about a possible move for Ronaldo, Bayern Munich’s CEO Oliver Kahn said on Tuesday: ‘We have a clear idea, a clear philosophy of how our squad should be put together.
‘We all appreciate him, there’s no discussion. We all love Cristiano Ronaldo, but that’s something that doesn’t fit into our idea.’
Ronaldo, meanwhile, is currently preparing for Portugal’s final World Cup group game against South Korea on Friday.
The 37-year-old netted Portugal’s opener in their 3-2 win over Ghana last week to become the only male player to score in five different World Cup tournaments.
