A ‘bright and happy’ 11-year-old has died in ‘tragic accident’ in a remote Scottish village.
Charlie Morrison was in a quad bike crash while reportedly travelling the half mile between his parents’ and grandparents’ homes in Durness, Sutherland.
Ambulance workers rushed to an area of land near the country’s most north westerly mainland village on Tuesday.
Despite efforts to save him, Charlie died at the scene around 4.30pm.
The schoolboy is said to be the only child of a ‘well known’ family, with the local community left ‘shocked’ by his death.
Someone saying they were Charlie’s father’s cousin paid tribute on Facebook, writing: ‘One cannot begin to imagine the depth of brokenness of heart and unutterable despair of mum and dad.’
The head teacher of Charlie’s school group, North West Sutherland schools, described him as ‘much loved’.
Graeme Smart said: ‘The whole North West Sutherland schools community is devastated by the tragic news of the death of one of our pupils.

‘He was a bright, happy boy who loved being in the outdoors, had a real love for technology and model making and a curiosity about how things worked.
‘He was a much loved and valued part of our school group and the schools are sadder places this morning.
‘The whole community is deeply shocked by this terrible accident and our thoughts are with the family at this time.’
Local councillor Hugh Morrison has described Durness as ‘a very sad place today’.
‘No words can express the depth of feeling over this tragedy’, he said.
‘The family are very well known and liked in the area and their loss will be felt widely.
‘There are just no adequate words to bring comfort to them over this.’
Sergeant Christopher Donaldson from the Road Policing Unit at Dingwall said officers’ ‘thoughts are with Charlie’s family and friends at this very difficult time’.
He added: ‘Police enquiries are continuing to establish the exact circumstances surrounding this crash.’
It comes after a shepherd died after plunging 40ft from a cliff on his quad bike near Durness in 2016.
Father-of-three Sandy Robbins, who was in his 60s, was tending sheep near Durness when tragedy struck.
