Qatar World Cup 2022: England onto last 16 – what happens next
After beating Wales 3-0 on Tuesday, England booked their spot in the Round of 16.
England will face African champions Senegal in the last 16 of the World Cup on Sunday (19:00).

On Sunday, England play Senegal – who progressed from the group stage for only a second time, following a 2-1 win over Ecuador, to finish second behind the Netherlands in Group A.
England’s next match kicks off on Sunday, 4 December at the Al Bayt Stadium in Qatar. Kick-off is at 19:00 GMT – which is 22:00 local time.
How good are the Senegal football team?
Senegal are ranked 18th in the world, which is in the same region as the USA, Wales and Iran, so England are still best placed to win. However, the USA game proved you can’t afford to be relaxed.
Senegal will however be without some key players, including Idrissa Gueye and Sadio Mane – who’s out of the tournament due to injury.
Senegal are Fifa’s highest-ranking African national football team. They won their first Africa Cup of Nations in 2021 a qualified for the 2018 World Cup – though they were booted out in the group stages.
What comes after the last 16?
If England do beat Senegal then they’ll have to prepare for a tough route to the final as a quarter-final tie with the winners of Group D – currently France – or the runners-up of Group C – currently Argentina – lies in store.
This match will take place on Saturday, 10 December and a semi-final would take place four days later, on Thursday, 14 December.
England may face Croatia – the 2018 World Cup runners-up, as well as Portugal.
The final will take place at the Lusail Stadium in Qatar on 18 December. Potential opponents could be the Netherlands, Poland, Spain or Brazil, who are all on the opposite side of the draw.
