World Cup 2022: England vs Wales – Three Lions show off depth of squad
Manager Gareth Southgate made four changes for the crucial game against Wales after England’s bleak goalless draw with the United States.
The addition of Phil Foden and Marcus Rashford to the front three, either side of Harry Kane, was the most significant of these alterations.
The two scored three goals for England, sending their team into the last 16 as Group B winners, proving that it was a smart move.
‘Big players stepped up’
Southgate said at his post-match press conference that he was impressed by the performance of the big names in this England team who had to play as squad players.
“Watching lots of games, the big players have stepped up,” he said. “Our forwards didn’t do that in the first half, but in the second half they really did.
“You need goals from all areas. It is a problem for opposition if the threat is coming from other areas of the pitch. It is competition for places and people have to deliver.”
Tuesday’s win over the fellow home nation showed off how much depth there is in the England squad, and even when first-choice players are left out, England are still capable of controlling the ball and confidently winning.
